What Is A Blog And How Does It Work

A blog or what was originally known as a weblog is a digital informational journal that displays write-ups (known as blog posts) that appear in reverse chronological order.

Here the latest blog posts appear on the top of the website or blog section. These platforms are either maintained by individuals or groups who share their views on a common subject area or on different subject areas.

Let’s look at my own blog.

BloggingScape Latest Blog Posts

Blogs are slightly different from websites as they allow bloggers to present and manage large amounts of content in a structured manner. They serve different purposes from educating the audience on different subjects to marketing and self-promotion.

I personally write on subjects that are close to my heart and you can do the same. Blogs are also a great way of publishing fresh and unique content on websites and improving their SEO (search engine optimization) score and visibility.

How To Go About Planning Your Blog Post?

How To Go About Planning Your Blog Post

Benjamin Franklin once famously said, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” Thus a good blog always starts with a good plan.

Irrespective of the number of blog writing examples you may have seen, your blog is destined to fail if you don’t do your homework. Here’s how I start planning for a blog and it would be a good roadmap for you to follow.

Start With Topic Research

Start With Topic Research

This is the basic ingredient of what makes a good blog post. The immediate question here is – how to research and write a blog post. If you plan to stick to a certain niche such as fashion, technology, travel, etc., you need to search for a topic within this niche.

For blogs that are a general commentary on the latest happenings, trends, and news, you can write on just about anything.

It is always a good idea to write on topics that are trending and see huge search volumes as they tend to attract more traffic and offer more monetization options.

However, you can always stick to subjects that are close to your heart and where you can pour out your knowledge and expertise well.

If you are looking for inspiration for your blog post then here are some places that would serve as great starting points as you will find topics that are trending and the doubts and confusions people have in their minds.

If you are looking for inspiration for your blog post then here are some places that would serve as great starting points as you will find topics that are trending and the doubts and confusions people have in their minds.

  1. Quora –  Quora is a treasure mine for every blogger. Here you can find answers to the questions related to your niche. In quora, you need to check which question is trendy and someone who is looking for the answer then you can create a blog post on that topic.
  2. Twitter Chats –  Twitter Chats great way to engage with the community of your niche and a great place to find out blog post ideas. To find out blog post ideas you need to filter all chats with a hashtag of your topic.
  3. Facebook Groups – If you check every website on the internet most of them have FB Groups Like our Facebook Group (BloggingScape VIP Group). You just need to find out Facebook groups that are related to your niche. The best possible way to get ideas by listening to people what they really want to read.
  4. YouTube – YouTube is the video consuming platform and the future of blogging but it doesn’t mean reading will end. So, you just need to search for the topic and find related YouTube Channels to get blog post ideas without any endeavor.
  5. Reddit – Reddit has the most hooked users and it’s the fifth most visited website in the sphere. In this, you need to find out which topic is generating lots of upvotes in your niche, and then you can create a blog post on that topic

A word of caution here – don’t merely go by trends and choose a topic where you lack subject expertise as your lack of knowledge may come out in the open.

For instance, if you don’t have good grasp of technology avoid writing expert blog posts on this niche as your target audience may be more knowledgeable and shall easily see between the lines. This attracts negative feedback which is undesirable for beginners.

Keyword Research is the ‘Key’ to Success

Keyword Research is the ‘Key’ to Success

Benjamin Franklin once famously said, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” Thus a good blog always starts with a good plan. Irrespective of the number of blog writing examples you may have seen, your blog is destined to fail if you don’t do your homework. Here’s how I start planning for a blog and it would be a good roadmap for you to follow.

For someone who is writing for the digital medium, you should be aware of the importance of keywords. These are the phrases that people type into Google or other search engines to find the desired content.

Without good keyword research, your blog is likely to remain buried below your competitors. Search “how to write a blog post in 2022 for beginners” and keyword research would definitely be one of the first things that every expert would talk about. I personally hold it as important as the information you’d share on your blog.

There are essentially four types of keywords that you will need to know about –

  1. Short Tail Keywords (keywords having one or two words)
  2. Mid Tail Keywords (keywords having three words)
  3. Long Tail Keywords (keywords having more than three words)
  4. LSI Keywords (keywords that are related to your main keyword)

You can clearly understand this from the example that Alexa has shared with how these keywords affect your conversion rate.

What Type of keywords are profitable for you?

What Type of keywords are profitable for you

Long-Tail Keywords and LSI Keywords are very beneficial keywords for your blog because these keywords have the highest conversion rate and most important they have the most targeted audience.

However, Short-Tail and Mid-tail Keywords have a huge search volume with extensive keywords difficulty. But if you want to make money then, you need to put your full focus on Long-Tail Keywords and LSI Keywords.

What do LSI Keywords mean?

LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing) keywords are those types of keywords that are related to your blog post-targeted topic.

LSI keywords help the search engines to understand the content of the page by adding relatable keywords.

Let take an example- If you are looking to target the keyword “best horror books in 2022” then you should create a list of related keywords to your main keyword i.e. “best psychological books,” “top thriller books”

So, LSI Keywords help search engines to recognize your content as well as give a boost to your content.

Let’s take one more example for better understanding:

If someone is searching for a “Jaguar” term then the search engine may not understand that which jaguar you are talking about.

So, Here LSI Keywords takes care of it.

If someone is talking about Jaguar Car then you need to incorporate LSI Keywords like “Automobile,” “Car Engine,” “Vehicle” etc.

On the other side, If someone is talking about Jaguar Animal then you need to add LSI Keywords like “Animal,” “Mammals,” “Jaws,” “Forest” etc.

LSI Keywords can find through keyword research tools such as SEMrush, Ahrefs, Kwfinder, and Magools.

As a beginner or someone who isn’t deep into technology, you may find keyword research a challenge but you can try the SEMrush (This is Recommended) and Ahrefs.

These tools help you find the best keywords, everything from short-tail to LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing) keywords. From search volumes to the competition they would offer you all the metrics that are important to you with keyword research.

What’s the Objective Behind the Keyword which You are Targeting?

Blogging Scape Keyword Objective Infographic

This step is very essential because it’ll define how your content outline is going to be.

There are 4 different types of objectives that you need to know first.

  1. Informational Objective (Someone who is looking for information)
  2. Navigational Objective (Someone who is looking to navigate in a website)
  3. Commercial Objective (Someone who is looking for the best products)
  4. Transactional Objective (Someone who is looking to buy something)

Let’s understand by an example: If someone wants to target the keyword “How to create a design” then you can easily see here that someone wants to learn to design and it comes under an Informational Objective Keyword.

Now, you need to choose which objective keyword performs as per your blog post topic.

SCAPERS Tip

If you want some more information then you can spy on your competitors by adding your main keyword in Google and picking the top 10 ranking websites. You need to check how they have written their content and how you can create two times better than them to outrank your competitor.

Now let’s understand the Layout for the Blog.

Layout for the Blog

Layout for the Blog

You have now zeroed on a topic and done the keyword research for your blog, next you have to move to the layout of your blog. This brings you to the question – how to structure a blog post? This structure should have an introduction, body, and conclusion.

The body should be further divided into different sections to entice your users. Breaking down the content into different sections also improves the SEO score of your blog. For example, this blog post outline what I had started with. You can change this (as I have done) as you go along but a basic structure helps you create write high-quality blog posts.

Writing Your Blog Post

Writing Your Blog Post

“To me, ideas are worth nothing unless executed. They are just a multiplier. Execution is worth millions” said the great Steve Jobs. All your keyword research and planning can go down the drain if you aren’t flawless in execution. You have done half the hard work and now it’s time to achieve excellence in execution. Let’s now look at how to create a blog post that grabs eyeballs.

Write a Killer Headline

Talk of “how to write better blog posts” and headlines would be one of the most important things to work on. They attract eyeballs and raise the expectations of your audience. A bad headline can kill your blog post while a good one can drive in tons of traffic. Here are a few tips for writing great headlines.

  • Write crisp and short headlines that can appear in one line
  • Grab attention with headlines that generate curiosity in your audience
  • Tease your audience with what you shall deliver without giving it away completely
  • If you are writing listicles mention the number of points in the headline. For example “5 Tips on How to Write An Engaging Blog Post”
  • To make the blog appear fresh use months/years. For example, try headline such as “How to Research for Blog Articles in 2022”

You can also use tools such as FatJoe and Coschedule to generate attractive headlines for your post.

Coschedule Headline Analyzer

Featured Image is the first impression of the blog post for your readers. This can increase your CTR (Click-through rate) of the blog post and readers will read the title on the image and then they will decide to read it or not.

So my suggestion is that creating a stunning Featured Image for the blog post is beneficial and it can increase your traffic too.

I mostly use Adobe Photoshop CC to design my Featured Image. Alternatively, you can check Canva to create a featured image for free of cost.

Focus on Introduction

Would you read a blog entry if the introduction doesn’t grab your attention? No, would be your audience and the same is true for your audience. You need to grab their attention in the first few line of the blog. It should be crisp and concise.

Try and highlight a problem that your users are facing or give a brief of the product or market you are reviewing. Remember you are writing for the web and not print and hence your audience always has the option of closing the window if they aren’t impressed by the introduction.

Write Naturally

Headlines, introduction, images, keywords are important but if you don’t back it up with quality content, your blog post would fail. When we talk about how to create high-quality blog posts your content has to engage the users. It needs to offer information; it must raise questions and give them the answers.

The standard blog writing format requires you to break down the content into multiple sections using sub-headings, bullets, and numbers. Above all, you need to maintain a natural flow and follow the AIDA rule – Attention, Interest, Desire, and Action.

End with a Natural Conclusion

You have informed the audience, you have provoked their thought, and raised their attention. Now you need to finish it with a well-summarized conclusion.

A good conclusion sums up your whole write-up. Here you can play with your creativity by either opting to close it with your final remarks or leave it open-ended with a question that provokes further thought in the minds of your audience.

Use Images, Charts and Videos Thoughtfully

Use Images, Charts and Videos Thoughtfully

Writing for digital media is completely different from that for print media. You aren’t constrained by space and printing challenges. That’s where images, charts, and videos play a very important role. In fact, all popular blogs have one thing in common – thoughtful use of images, charts, and videos.

Blog posts can seem dull and boring without the use of stimulating visuals. You can make your point in a more concise way using images and charts than writing paragraphs of texts.

Embedding videos is now among the most popular blog writing techniques as it offers your audience an audio-visual reference to your subject. Similarly, you need to make use of featured images which is the first thing that would grab your audiences’ attention the moment they land upon your blog.

Insert Call to Action

Insert Call to Action

Among the blog writing tips and tricks use of CTA is one that you should religiously follow. You are writing a blog post for a purpose.

This can range from increasing your social media following to adding to the subscriber list for your newsletter and increasing downloads for your software, media kit to trying to boost the sale of a product or service through affiliate marketing.

To achieve this desired goal you need to convince your audience to take a certain action. Call to Action elements serves this purpose and these help in driving your audience through the sales funnel. They can turn a casual visitor to your blog into a subscriber or a customer.

Blogging Scape Call to Action

Don’t Trade Quality for Quantity

Don’t Trade Quality for Quantity

“How long should a blog post be?” As you start out writing a great blog post the length of your post is something that would be bothering you. Yes, we are in the era of long-form blogs where you need to write long and well-researched posts to rank high on the search engines.

However, the length of the content is often an overblown factor. Though the length is an important factor for search engine rankings it isn’t a standalone factor

The length of the blog should be factored into the topic you are choosing to write on and your target audience. For instance, if you are reviewing the latest headphones targeted for the average buyers a 1000-2000 word post covering all the specs, user experience and conclusion should be good. But in case you are writing on vaccine development for Covid-19 that primarily targets medical professionals and researchers a 10000-word gig would also hold on to the audience.

You can’t bluff your readers. If you are writing a post that sucks you would bit adieu to your readers. In short, you should never trade quality for quantity. As the basic rules of blog writing would tell you if your post doesn’t deserve to be ranked on the quality of the content, it won’t rank on the word count! Period

Improve Your Writing Through Feedback

Improve Your Writing Though Feedback

The beauty of the digital medium is the fact that it fosters two-way communication. You should always focus on engaging with your audience and not merely serving them sermons. This is where it is important to ask for feedback.

Feedback lets you get a sense of what your audience thinks about your writing style and helps you become a better blogger. Your blog site should have a feedback section (the one below is from my own blog) and in case you are writing on third-party platforms request your audience to email their feedback or write to you on your social media handles.

Hence, you need to ensure your blog post is free of unintentional plagiarism. Copyscape should be your go-to tool to detect plagiarism and take corrective actions. You can also try free tools such as Plagiarism Detector or Plagiarism Checker.
